Lee Hill
Founding Partner
Lee Hill is Founding Partner of SILENT Solutions LLC, an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) consulting firm he started in Silicon Valley in 1992. He is also Managing Director of Silent Solutions GmbH (Munich).
Lee received his MSEE with highest honors from the Missouri University of Science & Technology EMC Laboratory, where he studied under Dr.’s Thomas Van Doren, Todd Hubing, and James Drewniak.
For more than 40 years, Lee has helped engineers solve EMC problems that often seem impossible to explain—and has spent more than 35 of those years teaching other engineers how to do the same.
Today, Lee teaches a graduate course in EMC as a member of the adjunct faculty at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is also an EMC course instructor for the University of Oxford in England and for the IEEE EMC Society’s annual Clayton R. Paul Global University and Henry Ott Fundamentals programs. In 2025, the IEEE EMC Society recognized his work in engineering education with its Excellence in Continuing Education Award.
Teaching is one of Lee’s favorite parts of his work at SILENT, but most of his career has been spent working hands-on with electronic hardware—troubleshooting elusive EMI problems, conducting design reviews, and helping engineering teams prevent both regulatory failures and functional electrical-noise problems before they reach the EMC test laboratory or the customer.
Earlier in his career, Lee was Principal EMC and Systems Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation’s Workstation Systems Engineering Group in Palo Alto, California. In 1994, he started Silent Solutions LLC in Menlo Park, California, an EMC and RF consulting firm focused on design, troubleshooting, and training. Randal Vaughn joined him as a business partner in 1998, bringing deep experience in RF circuit design and troubleshooting. In 2017, Lee founded Silent Solutions GmbH in Munich, extending SILENT’s consulting and training activities into Europe.
Lee earned his MSEE at the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s EMC Laboratory, where he studied under Drs. Tom Van Doren, Todd Hubing, and Jim Drewniak. He has also taught EMC courses for the University of California Berkeley Extension, Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, Freescale Semiconductor, and General Motors University. His courses have taken him throughout the United States and to China, Taiwan, Singapore, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Germany, France, Poland, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
Lee is the named inventor on three U.S. patents related to EMI control in electronic systems and also provides expert-witness services in patent litigation.
His involvement with the IEEE EMC Society spans more than three decades. He has served on the Society’s Board of Directors, chaired its Distinguished Lecturer program, served as an IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturer, chaired the Society’s Awards Committee, and chaired the Symposium’s Clayton R. Paul Global University and Henry Ott Fundamentals programs. He has also been a frequent speaker at EMC Society chapter and fundraising events across the United States and Europe.
In 2026, Lee served as Technical Program Vice Chair for the IEEE Symposium on EMC+SIPI in Dallas, Texas. He was previously Co-Technical Chair of the 2003 IEEE Symposium on EMC in Boston and Vice Chair of the IEEE EMC Society’s Central New England Chapter.
His other professional activities have included service on the Editorial Review Board of Printed Circuit Design magazine and membership on the original IEEE P1180 ad hoc committee on low-frequency magnetic-field measurement for video display terminals. His earlier honors include the IEEE EMC Society’s 1999 Certificate of Appreciation for contributions to engineering education, the 1993 IEEE EMC Society President’s Memorial Scholarship, and the 1994 Missouri Collegiate Entrepreneur Award.
Lee now lives in Munich with his wife Ellen and continues to consult and teach EMC worldwide.
